For Christmas this year my wife got a me a 55 gallon aquarium. I love it, it has been a wonderful gift, though sometimes I think that she has doubts about getting it for me. My one 55 gallon tank has sense multiplied into one 10 gallon tank for my eldest daughter, and one 13 gallon that I use as a quarantine/hospital/breeding tank out in the garage. I have always found them to be very peaceful and a wonderful addition to any room (shhh don’t tell her but I might try to sneak in one or two more around the house.). The last time that I had an aquarium was over 20 years ago (crap I am getting old), and a lot of things have changed. Back then it was little more than putting water in the tank, putting the fish in and feeding them. Now there is a whole process to properly preparing the tank for fish, and lots of good science behind it (wife will often call it my big chemistry set).
So I thought that I would start writing about what it is that I have learned, and hopefully help someone out there keep from running into some of the problems that I have run into. Hopefully as I write down the things that I have learned and my adventures it will become clearer to me and help get the word out there about proper fish care.
For my first installment I plan to talk about the Nitrogen Cycle this is by far the most fundamental part of fish keeping. Understanding this will allow you to keep fish for many year.
